Zusammenfassung

As Black women pursue leadership and advocate for institutional change, they often do so within systems that were not designed to recognize or support the full complexity of their experiences. Their contributions are frequently visible, yet their perspectives, expertise, and labor remain undervalued or misunderstood. Barriers to inclusion often operate through implicit expectations surrounding professionalism, authority, and leadership rather than through explicit policies alone. Black feminist scholarship offers critical frameworks for understanding how race, gender, and power intersect to shape these experiences, demonstrating that the challenges Black women face cannot be fully understood by examining either dimension in isolation. Meaningful institutional change requires not only creating opportunities for Black women to lead but also fostering environments that value, listen to, and act upon their insights. Examining these dynamics provides important perspectives on leadership, equity, and transformation within higher education and other organizational settings. Black Feminism, Power, and the Struggle for Institutional Change: Behind Enemy Lines examines how Black women navigate, challenge, and transform institutions that have historically constrained their authority and influence. Bridging Black feminist theory with lived experience, this book explores how intersectionality shapes leadership, career advancement, and institutional engagement while illuminating the structural and cultural barriers that persist across professional and academic environments. Moving beyond narratives of resilience alone, it highlights strategies for fostering sustainable success, advancing equity, and redefining institutional leadership. Covering topics such as African diaspora, epistemic injustice, and tone policing, this book is a valuable resource for graduate and doctoral students, higher education faculty, diversity, equity, and inclusion practitioners, talent development professionals, leadership program directors, researchers, and policymakers.
