Zusammenfassung

For more than three centuries, the spiritual writings of Madame Guyon have drawn readers seeking a deeper life of prayer, surrender, and communion with God. Yet English-speaking readers have generally encountered her correspondence through selections, abridgments, and rearranged editions.Christian and Spiritual Letters presents the first complete English translation of Madame Guyon's great collection of spiritual correspondence, translated directly from the original French edition published in 1717-1718.This Volume I, translated from the first French volume of 1717, contains the complete sequence of 240 numbered letters, together with the supplementary letter printed at the end of the original volume.Organized around the great themes of the interior life, these letters explore prayer, faith, abandonment to divine Providence, detachment from self, suffering, spiritual purification, pure love, discernment, and the soul's movement toward an increasingly simple dependence upon God.Guyon writes not as a systematic theologian but as a spiritual guide addressing particular persons in particular circumstances. Her counsel therefore ranges from practical advice for those beginning the interior life to demanding reflections intended for souls already far advanced in the way of abandonment. Throughout the letters, one encounters her characteristic insistence upon God alone, naked faith, surrender of self-will, fidelity to grace, and a love that seeks God for Himself rather than for His gifts. The present translation seeks to preserve both the force and the distinctive spiritual vocabulary of Guyon's French while presenting her thought in clear and readable English. The original order, numbering, and thematic organization of the 1717 edition have been retained.Volume I of the First Complete English TranslationA major work of Christian mystical and devotional literature, now presented in English in its complete form rather than through selected extracts.
