Born in Soviet Ukraine to a military officer father and a pediatric nurse mother, he spent his childhood moving from garrison to garrison across the USSR. He earned his doctorate from the USSR Academy of Sciences for work on the mathematical theory of wave propagation in random media and, in the 1980s, became one of the Soviet Union's earliest Internet pioneers alongside colleagues at the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy.

After immigrating to the United States in 1995 and settling in New Jersey, Dr. Gindler turned the same analytical rigor that once served physics toward the study of politics and political philosophy.
