A scholarly edition of a volume of The Anatomy of Melancholy by Robert Burton. The edition presents an authoritative text, together with an introduction, commentary notes, and scholarly apparatus.
Burton's learned and satirical The Anatomy of Melancholy (first published in 1621) is one of the last great works of English prose to have remained unedited. This volume inaugurates an authoritative edition of the work, which is being prepared by a team of scholars from both sides of the Atlantic. It will be followed by two further volumes of text with textual apparatus, and two volumes of commentary.
the physical representation of the text...is generally excellent. The printing of the textual notes is just beautiful, with each textual note getting its own line! Doubtless, the Clarendon edition of Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy will be the standard text of the work for a long time and greatly benefit critics and students. The bibliographical work shows great care and thought, and the textual apparatus is as comprehensive as a modern publisher is likely to produce.
